2011 Coffee and Chat

Happy 2011 to all the parents and children.

On Tuesday 25th January, Miss Man and Linda organised a lovely 'Coffee and Chat' morning for parents.

Many parents turned up and greeted each other with a hug and a smile. They all helped themselves to a tea/coffee and a couple of biscuits before having a good chat.

It was lovely to see old and new parents attend this social event. Many have asked for some more of these ‘Coffee and Chat’ sessions in the future. Miss Man and Linda will keep you posted on the next one.

Thank you ladies and gentleman for all coming and keep checking for more news about the new ESOL course coming soon.

Manford's ESOL Celebration Ceremony 2009-10

Parents who attended the ESOL Next Step 2009-10 course and Family Learning, all came together to celebrate their achievements at Manford Primary School on Tuesday 6th July 2010.

The celebration started off with a coffee and chat session in the Infant Hall. All the parents were delighted to see each other once again. They instantly started to chat and feel at home, serving each other coffee or tea.

Miss Jacobs started the celebration with an introductory speech, welcoming all parents and congratulating everyone for completing their course. Then one by one, each parent had their certificate awarded to them, followed by a photograph with their children and Miss Jacobs.

It was a very successful celebration and many of the parents are looking forward to further courses run by the school next year.

Thank you to all the parents who attended and Miss Jacobs for awarding the certificates.

Special thanks to Barbara Wright and Linda Curtis for helping Miss Man with organising and running the very successful ESOL course this year.

Lets Get Reading

WOW.... What a wonderful session we all had!

All the parents arrived and greeted each other with a hug and smiles. It was wonderful to see them all chatting and making each other cups of tea/coffee. The atmosphere was relaxing and friendly with laughter spread around the room.

Miss Man kicked started the session by getting the parents singing phonic songs. The rest of the session was all about reading with their children.

The parents worked together to read a variety of dual language books. Some parents read in their home language to the rest of the group whilst Linda read the story in English.

Some parents worked together as a group to discuss the pictures and text. They shared good ideas with each other and had a good discussion about how their child responded.

A big thank you to Lorraine Beacon (PSA from Oak Dale Junior School) and Barbara Wright (Senior Education Officer Children's Services) who also attended this session and worked with a group of parents.

All the parents were engaged and enjoyed working together.

The parents worked very hard to undergo all the activities Miss Man set them and fully accomplished all objectives set for that session.

A BIG WELL DONE TO ALL THE PARENTS FOR WORKING SO HARD.

Reading with Children

Reading is an important part of children’s learning. It is a skill that children need in all areas of the curriculum.

Research demonstrates that if parents read with their children, children’s reading standards can improve. Regular times at home to read with your child, and using strategies that are consistent with school, will significantly support your child’s reading.

Reading with children is the main focus for today and next weeks ESOL sessions. Miss Man talked and discussed with the parents the importance of reading and gave them lots of strategies they could use at home to help their child read.

The parents worked very hard and helped each other to read a variety of dual language text and English stories. Those that had limited English were supported by those more confident.

A big thank you to one of my parents for bringing in a Chinese New Year cake for all us to sample. It was absolutely delicious and everyone fully enjoyed eating it.

Great Sounds Blended into the Lesson

Session two of the ESOL Next Step was a great success. The parents have thoroughly enjoyed learning about blends and letter sounds.

Many of them have enjoyed working with their children singing the songs at home. The children have returned to school telling us all about their parents progress with big smiles.

A Great Turn Out!

The first 'ESOL Next Step' session was a great success. We had a great turnout of parents who arrived at Manford after dropping off their children either to their child's class or to the crèche provided by the school.

The parents all made each other cups of tea/coffee and ate a biscuit, before sitting down and having a nice morning chat.

The session kicked off with Miss Man standing at the front of the classroom and introducing her and others to the parents. Handouts and folders were distributed to all the parents by Linda Curtis. A brief summary of the course outline was given and then it was all work from then on.

All the parents watched Miss Man attentively and paid close attention to what was being taught.

In this session, the parents were introduced to phonics and how to use this to support their children with reading. They thoroughly enjoyed singing the songs.

A big thank you to Linda Curtis for all her help with getting everything organised the day before and all the parents who attended. We are looking forward to seeing you all again next week.
